A life drawing session set up with easels, boards and charcoal in a warmly lit hall

Life drawing parties

Two hours with a professional model, all materials supplied, and considerably more laughing than the phrase "life drawing" suggests. Over 18s only.

Nobody in the room can draw. That is fine.

This is the thing people worry about, so let us deal with it first. Almost nobody who books a life drawing party can draw, and the session is built around that. Richard, our model, has been doing this for eleven years and spends as much time putting people at ease as he does holding a pose.

He will give you some genuine technique along the way if you want it. Where to start a line. How to get proportion roughly right without measuring. Why your first attempt looks like a potato and your fourth does not.

Costumed or nude, your call. Plenty of groups go for costumed only, especially work parties and mixed groups. Others want the full thing. You decide when you book, and nobody is made to feel prudish or daring either way.

The poses start short, thirty seconds or a minute, which is long enough to be funny and too short to be intimidating. They get longer as the group settles. By the end you will have a stack of drawings, two or three of which are genuinely not bad.

About Richard

Richard Terry has modelled for eleven years, for art colleges and private groups. He is unflappable, funny, and very good at reading a room that has arrived nervous.

He also gives a lot of his time to charity fundraising sessions. If you are running one, ring us: the conversation goes differently.

Questions people are too polite to ask

How do we decide costumed or nude?

Talk to the group first, then tell us when you book. It is easier to agree in advance than to make a decision on the night with everyone listening. Costumed only is £60 rather than £75.

Can we drink during it?

Yes, and most groups do. Bring your own, subject to your venue's rules. The drawings get worse and the session gets better.

What space do we need?

Room for everyone to sit in a loose circle with a clear view of the middle, and somewhere private for the model to change. A village hall is ideal. A large front room works for six or eight.

Can we combine it with chocolate tasting?

Yes, and it is a good evening: tasting for the first hour, drawing after. We have run the pair before. Ring us rather than booking them separately and we will price the whole thing.

Got a date in mind?

Tell us the date, the ages and roughly how many, and we will come back to you the same day with what we can do.

  • Set up an hour before, and we tidy up afterwards
